WELCOME

Welcome to INTERMATIK, a web-based intermediate German grammar review. This web-based grammar will allow you to read concise, easy-to-follow grammar explanations, to hear all examples spoken by a native speaker and to do your exercises right on the computer. Appropriate feedback for all of your tasks is included in the web-site. This is an exciting new tool in the teaching of grammar and we are looking forward to your feedback. If you have problems with the grammar, please consult your classroom teacher or write to:

Franziska Lys at flys@northwestern.edu

2.

ACCESSING THE GRAMMAR

You can access the INTERMATIK site either on a McIntosh or an IBM compatible computer.

  • Open the most current browser (Explorer, Safari, Netscape, etc).
  • Type in the following address:
    • intermatik.madstudio.northwestern.edu

As a student of German 102, you need to register in order to have access to the grammar. You can register from any computer on campus. Once you are registered, the site can be used from computer stations on or off campus.

  • To register, click on "user registration", then "student registration".
  • Type in your net ID and the authorization code (ask your teacher). Click "continue".
  • Select your class section (pull-down menu), then choose your own password. Click "continue".
  • You may want to print out the summary page - just in case you might forget your password.

The grammar will track all of the work you are doing. It is therefore important, that you always log on with your name and password. The exercise scores and the answers of your free response exercises will be stored under the name with which you logged on.

As an outside person, you may log on as a guest. In this case, your work will not be tracked.

If you are denied access to the grammar, then contact:

Franziska Lys at flys@northwestern.edu

CONFIGURE YOUR BROWSER

There are software requirements for the INTERMATIK site.

Computers in Public Labs
Most computers in the public labs on campus have the correct software and you should have no problem accessing the grammar. If you do have a problem, print this page and show it to the lab manager and ask for assistance. Since this grammar contains sound files and video files, you will need to take along a headset (walkman type) to the public labs to listen to the sounds and to the video (the headsets are provided in the MMLC lab).

Computers in dorms or at home
To work with the grammer in your dorm or in your room, you will need a current browser (Explorer, Safari, Netscape) and two plug-ins to access the grammar correctly. Once you log on to the web-site, the program will tell you whether you have the appropriate software installed. If you have the appropriate software, you should see the words "intermatik" fading in and out. Below that you should see a Quicktime controller which will allow you to play audio. Click on the big graphic to the left and you will be ready to go.

If your browser does not have the appropriate plug-ins, it will provide you with a link to download the appropriate software. The two plug-ins you will need (they are usually stored in the "plug-in" folder in your Explorer or Netscape folder) are:

Plug-ins: Quicktime and Flash 5

Alternatively, you can also get the two plug-ins from the following web-sites:

Quicktime: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/

Shockwave:http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

TECHNICAL PROBLEMS

QUESTION

SOLUTION

When I open my browser and go to the index page, the menu bar on the left is black and I can't use the navigation.

Shockwave (the flash plug-in) did not get installed properly. Try installing it again from:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/

Make sure you are running only one version of Netscape or Explorer on your machine and that the plug-in is in the plug-in folder in your current Netscape or Explorer folder.

QUESTION

SOLUTION

When clicking on a menu item, it says "you have performed an illegal operation and must shut down." Under details (of the error), it says:

NETSCAPE caused a stack fault in module QTIM32.DLL at 0137:3d12c98f.

Your Quicktime plug-in is not the correct version. You need to have Quicktime 4 or higher installed -- any older version will not do it. If you are running an older version of Quicktime and attempt to use INTERMATIK, your browser may crash. Reinstall Quicktime from
http:// www.quicktime.com

QUESTION

SOLUTIONS

I was trying to print out my exercises. However, the only thing it print is the menu bar on the left.

There are two frames on your browser window: the menu bar on the left and the exercise frame. You need to first select the frame (click anywhere in the frame you want to print). Then choose "print frame" from the file menu and you should be all set.

QUESTION

SOLUTIONS

I am a PC user and was using the shortcuts below to type the "umlauted" characters but it did not work.

The numeric keypad is the group of keys arranged like a calculator on the right hand side of your keyboard. You must use these keys (and not the single row of keys above the "QWERTY..." keys) to produce accents. Since laptop computers do not generally have a separate numeric keypad, you will be unable to use this methodology on a portable computer. In addition, make sure that the "Num Lock" or "Number Lock" function is active and/or lit.

UMLAUTS ON THE MACINTOSH

Below are some general instructions on how to make an accented character on a MacIntosh, followed by a table summarizing ways to make other characters in the same manner. You may wish to print this page for facilitated reference while using INTERMATIK.

To illustrate how accents may be produced in the Mac OS, let us trace through an example of how to produce the character ü. To produce ü, you have to use the sequence ([option] + [u], then "u"). That means you hold (and continue to hold) the key labeled "option" while you then press the "u" key and let go. Then you type the letter "u" normally. To have an umlaut to an uppercase letter, you would follow the same process of holding down the option key and pressing the "u" key, but you would then have to type a capital letter (hold the option key down and type the letter you want to capitalize).

Summarized below are accents encountered in German, along with the shortcuts to produce them in Mac OS.

Character
Shortcut
ä
type Option-u, then a
ö
type Option-u, then o
ü
type Option-u, then u
Ä
type Option-u, then Shift a
Ö
type Option-u, then Shift o
Ü
type Option-u, then Shift u
ß
type Option-s

Below are some general instructions on how to make an accented character on your PC, followed by a table summarizing ways to make other characters in the same manner. You may wish to print this page for facilitated reference while using INTERMATIK.

To illustrate how accents may be produced in the Mac OS, let us trace through an example of how to produce the character ü. To produce ü, you have to use the sequence ( [Alt] + 252 ). That means that you must hold (and continue to hold) the key labeled "Alt" while you then type in the number 252 on your numeric keypad. Then, when you let go of the "Alt" key, the letter ü should appear.

NOTE 1
The numeric keypad is the group of keys arranged like a calculator on the right hand side of your keyboard. You must use these keys (and not the single row of keys above the "QWERTY..." keys) to produce accents. Since laptop computers do not generally have a separate numeric keypad, you will be unable to use this methodology on a portable computer.

NOTE 2
You must be sure that the "Num Lock" or "Number Lock" function is active and/or lit. Generally, there is a "Num Lock" key in the upper left hand corner of the numeric keypad. Usually, pressing it will activate/deactivate an indicator light on the keyboard. The indicator should be lit to indicate that Num Lock is on.
