A. The use of the simple past tense (Der Gebrauch des Präteritums)

The simple past tense (or narrative past) in German is used to describe or report past events. It is used in writing and formal speaking. It is equivalent to the English simple past or progressive past tense.

Albert Einstein lebte in Amerika, als der Zweite Weltkrieg ausbrach.
Albert Einstein was living in the United States when the Second World War broke out.

German has three groups of verbs, each of them conjugated a bit differently:

  • weak verbs (also called regular verbs)
  • strong verbs (also called irregular verbs)
  • mixed verbs (also called irregular weak verbs)
