KAPITEL 6 | TEIL 1 - INDEPENDENT CLAUSES |

D. Conjunctions (Konjunktionen)

Both independent and dependent clauses can be joined with conjunctions.

In German, there are three types of conjunctions:

  1. Coordinating conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions are used to connect independent clauses and they do not affect the word order in either clause.
    • Wir haben einen Apfelbaum in unserem Garten, und mein Nachbar hat einen Kirschbaum.
We have an apple tree in our yard and my neighbor has a cherry tree.

      Beispiele:
Und (and); aber (but); oder (or); sondern (rather); denn (because).

  2. Subordinating conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions connect an independent clause with a dependent clause. In a dependent clause the conjugated verb is always at the end of the clause.
    • Sie isst viele Früchte, weil sie gesund bleiben will.
She eats a lot of fruit because she wants to stay healthy.

Beispiele (only a sample list, not complete):
Weil (because); obwohl (although); als (when; once in the past); dass (that); damit (so that); falls (in case of); sobald (as soon as); sodas (so that); wann (when, a question word); wenn (wjenever, if); nachdem (after, earlier tense); bevor (before); während (while); da (since, because).

  3. Sentence conjunctions, sometimes also called conjunctive adverbs (Satzkonjunktionen oder Konjunktionaladverbien)
Sentence conjunctions establish the connection between two independent sentences. The conjunctions can either begin a sentence or follow the verb. As opposed to conjunctions they are real elements of sentences and thus occupy the first (or third) position.
    • Er isst nicht gern Gemüse. Trotzdem hat er einen eigenen Garten.

      Beispiele:
Deshalb (For this reason, that’s why); folglich (consequently); danach (after that); darum (therefore), dazu (in addition to), dennoch (nevertheless), inzwischen (meanwhile).
  4. There is another special group of conjunctions: double conjunctions
    • Wir haben nicht nur die Wohnung aufgeräumt, sondern auch die Wände neu gestrichen.
Not only did we tidy up the apartment, but we also repainted the walls
