A. Independent clauses and coordinating conjuctions (Hauptsätze und koordinierende Konjunktionen) Two or more independent clauses may be connected by coordinating conjunctions. There are five coordinating conjunctions in German:
Coordinating conjunctions merely "connect" two sentences. They are not part of either sentence. Therefore, they do not affect the order of subject and verb in either clause. Coordinating conjunctions are preceded by a comma. If the subject or the verb in the second clause is identical to the subject or the verb in the first clause and is left out in the second clause, then the comma is dropped with the coordinating conjunctions und and oder. Joshua isst kein Fleisch, und Noah trägt keine Wolle. |
