A. Indirect statements and indirect questions (indirekte Aussagen und indirekte Fragen)

Indirect statements are usually introduced by a main clause, followed by a comma:

Er sagte, ...

He said ...

Sie meinte, ...

She claimed ...

Indirect questions are also typically introduced by a main clause, followed by a comma:

Weißt du, ...

Do you know ...

Wir wissen nicht, ...

We don't know ....

The following conjunctions and question words are used with indirect statements and questions:

Just like with dependent clauses, the conjugated verb of the indirect statement or question is always placed at the end of the sentence.

Direct Statement

Er muss morgen zum Arzt gehen.
He has to go to the doctor tomorrow.

Indirect Statement

Er sagt, dass er morgen zum Arzt gehen muss.
He says that he has to go to the doctor tomorrow.
