KAPITEL 6 | TEIL 6 - SENTENCE CONJUNCTIONS |

A. Sentence conjunctions (Satzkonjunktionen)

Sentence conjunctions (sometimes also called adverbs) combine two full sentences. They can be at the beginning of the second sentence or right after the verb in the sentence.

The following are the most common sentence conjunctions and their meaning.

deshalb / deswegen (aus diesem Grund)

therefore / that's why (for that reason)

trotzdem

despite

folglich (infolgedessen)

it follows (consequently)

gleichzeitig (währenddessen)

at the same time (meanwhile)

vorher (zuvor)

before that (previously)

danach (dann)

afterwards (then)

später

later

schließlich

finally / after all

zuletzt

lastly

Since sentence conjunctions are independent sentence elements, they do not affect the word order in a sentence. However, when they take the first position, as they do in two examples below, both the conjugated verb and then the subject must come directly after the conjunction. No comma is required.
