A. Common subordinating conjunctions (subordinierende Konjunktionen)

There are many subordinating conjunctions in German. We have listed the most common ones for you below.

als

when (with past tense)

obwohl / obschon* obgleich*

although

als ob / als wenn

as if

seit / seitdem

since (temporal)

bevor / ehe*

before (temporal)

sobald

as soon as

bis

until

solange

as long as

damit / so daß

so that

sooft

as often as

indem

by doing something

während

while, whereas

nachdem

after (with past perfect)

because, since


*These conjunctions are used in literary writing.

The clause containing the subordinating conjunction (the dependent clause) may precede or follow the main clause. 

Compare the following examples. In the first example, the dependent clause follows the main clause. In the second example, the dependent clause precedes the main clause.

Er raucht sehr viel, obwohl es ungesund ist.
He smokes a lot although it is unhealthy.

Obwohl es ungesund ist, raucht er sehr viel.
Although it is unhealthy, he smokes a lot.

Now compare the word order in both examples.

  • Within the subordinating clause, the conjugated verb is in last position
  • When the subordinating clause begins the sentence, it will end with the conjugated verb. The verb of the main clause will follow the comma.
