B. Subordinating conjunctions and prepositions (subordinierende Konjunktionen und Präpositionen)

Subordinating conjunctions are different from prepositions even though they may look alike in some cases.

A subordinating conjunction always introduces an independent clause.

A preposition forms a semantic unit with the following noun or pronoun.

Dependent Clause:

Seit sie den Unfall gehabt hat, ist sie zweimal zum Arzt gegangen.
She has been to the doctor twice since she had the accident.

Prepositional Phrase:

Seit dem Unfall hat sie Schmerzen in der Schulter.
She has been having pain in her shoulder since the accident.

Dependent Clause:

Sie hat nichts gesagt, während der Arzt sie untersucht hat.
She did not say anything while the physician examined her.

Prepositional Phrase:
